Monopoly is undoubtedly one of the most popular board games of all time. Created by Elizabeth Magie in 1906, it was radically adapted by unemployed worker Charles Darrow during Great Depression, propelling the game to that period of immense popularity.
Over 100 years later, this classic game has been reborn as a video game, becoming one of the most popular mobile games today. It features some differences from the original game, with some squares having their functions modified to accommodate the video game format.
Monopoly Go Boards
The game includes over 1,500 boards, with more constantly being added. There are approximately 150 to 160 completely unique boards. Each board features a unique theme and visual design.
Some are based on real-world cities like New York, Paris, and Tokyo, featuring recreated landmarks like Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower. Others feature fantasy themes, such as Haunted Mansion, Atlantis, and Mars Colony. Monopoly Go also features collaborations with other franchises, such as Star Wars and Avengers.
You need to upgrade landmark buildings. Once all five landmark buildings are fully upgraded, you’ll unlock the next board. Upgrading the board is the player’s long-term goal.
For about every two months, there’s a sticker album where players must collect stickers to complete the album, which is the short-term goal.
Completing the sticker albums rewards players with many Monopoly Go dice and collectibles, but it’s also a challenging task. Many high-star stickers are difficult to collect, requiring players to invest more dice in the event. If you’re short on resources or need help with an event boost, you can visit IGGM.com, which offers a variety of Monopoly Go event boost services to help you successfully claim rewards from various events.
Monopoly Go Squares
Each board in Monopoly Go consists of 40 squares arranged clockwise in a circular path, similar to the classic board game.
Property Squares (22 Squares)
Acquire land ownership and build houses/hotels. Other players will give you rent for staying there.
Railroad Squares (One Square Per Side, 4 Squares Total)
When a player’s chess piece lands on a railroad square, one of two events may occur:
1. Bank Heist
When a Bank Heist is triggered, the player enters another player’s “Vault” and has the opportunity to heist the other player’s unused cash through a mini-game.
This mini-game has three possible outcomes, the highest payout of which results in the player being bankrupted.
The player being stolen is often a friend and will see the in-game notifications about who stole their money, giving them the opportunity to retaliate later.
Since the target of the theft is the other player’s unspent currency, players are often motivated to spend their Vault cash quickly to prevent losses.
Sometimes during flash events, a heist can escalate to a Mega Heist, where all rewards are multiplied.
2. Shutdown
This is a straightforward PvP mechanic. Shutdown demotes an opponent’s landmark by one level (if it doesn’t have a shield, it will be successfully destroyed) and leaves the attacker’s portrait and chess piece on the landmark.
This demotion hinders the opponent’s progress and allows them to see who destroyed it the next time they log in, potentially triggering retaliation.
Players can protect their landmarks by collecting shields. Each time a landmark is attacked, if it has a shield, it automatically negates the damage, so players should log in regularly to collect shields to prevent their landmarks from being destroyed.
Croner Squares
- Go: Gain base funds when passing through or staying in a location. (Starting square, one square)
- Jail Visitors: Safe zone, no penalty. (One square)
- Free Parking: Safe zone, no penalty, special events may activate a reward pool (one square)
- Go To Jail: Staying in a location may result in imprisonment, requiring the dice roll or bail to leave (one square)
Tax Squares (Two Squares)
If a player lands on one of the two tax squares, they must give you cash.
- Luxury Tax (One square)
- Income Tax (One square)
Utilities Squares (Two Squares)
In contrast with tax squares, players receive cash.
- Electric Company (One square)
- Water Works (One square)
Chance Squares (Three Squares)
If a player lands on one of Monopoly GO’s three chance squares, they draw a card and win-or-lose money based on their luck.
Community Chest Squares (Three squares)
A community chest requires at least five friends to open. When a player lands on a community chest square, they can deposit cash into the chest.
Players can then multiply their winnings by playing a 3×3 flip card mini-game; flipping cards can earn cash, dice, sticker packs, or a Community Chest Key (which ends the mini-game and opens the chest).
The goal is to accumulate as many multipliers as possible before turning over a key. However, the outcome is almost entirely based on luck.
If you turn over the portrait of an online friend, you receive an online friend bonus, allowing you to manually select the next card to turn over. This gives you a sense of control beyond randomness and emphasizes the value of having a friend online. Players can also choose to gift other players some bonuses.
Currently, the most reliable way to earn 6-star Monopoly Go stickers is to complete the three Community Chest chests.
